Communication in the Wild is a multipurpose studio for people interested in communication as a field of inquiry and experimental practice. Adhering to no particular disciplinary mantle, Comm-Wild seeks to investigate communication as a term, a body of critical knowledge, and a conceptual apparatus for exploring multiple forms of human action and interaction.
As an academic field, Communication Studies tends to draw on neighboring disciplines, such as sociology, cognitive science, anthropology, rhetoric, and political science, in order to study how people and groups interact, relate, work, play, and organize through multiple practices. Despite this broad interdisciplinary perspective, Communication scholars do not always recognize the many forms of communication that escape attention even in the most inclusive of interdisciplinary regimes, particularly when these forms belie scholarly conventions or violate academic norms.
CommWild aims in part to encourage aberrant forms and formal aberrations by offering a space for critical and creative communication studies that either test the limits or operate outside of the academic mainstream. Concerned with communicative objects and activities that live in the gaps and margins of disciplinary practice, Comm-Wild also invites radical alternatives to standard academic publishing and instruction routines. High- and low-tech making, performing, designing, teaching, researching, and event-planning are some key components of communication in the wild.
